1Jn 5:20  And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

God comprises three distinct persons. The three together make Him God. An analogy of one being three is “time”. With time, for example, the past is distinct from the present, which is distinct from the future. Each is simultaneous. Yet, they are not three ‘times,’ but only one. God is Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus is called the Son, but not in the way we define the word.

There has been so much controversy over Jesus being called the “Son of God”. Many religions teach He was the physical son of God, meaning God came before Jesus. He is not the son in the sense of having an earthy mother and a father. Jesus is God and God sent an essence of Himself to earth to be birth from a woman. This offspring from the woman would be called the “Son of God”. When the Holy Spirit came upon Mary, the woman God selected, He told her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God”.

The Bible often uses the word “son” to mean, “possessing the nature of”. When sinful individuals are called “sons of disobedience, it is not a literal offspring of disobedience. But they possess the nature of disobedience. Just like Jesus possesses the nature of God. Bottom line, God declared Jesus was to be called “Son of God”. He is called the Son of God because the scripture describes who He is! The title “Son of God” does not show Jesus was the literal offspring of His Father. The Jews knew exactly what it meant when Jesus called himself the Son of God. They called it blasphemy and wanted to kill Him because they understood He was claiming to be God. In their culture, that is exactly what it meant.
